Accessibility Statement

Making patients’ and clinicians’ lives easier is core to our philosophy.

We aim to make all of our products accessible and usable for as many people as possible.

We involve disabled users.

We have a User Advisory Board and User Testing Groups for all our products. We purposely recruit people into these groups that we feel need support in terms of accessibility, or where a disability may potentially disadvantage them from using our software if it wasn’t designed with them in mind.

We involve accessibility experts.

To ensure the best experience for disabled users, we involve experts in accessibility design and testing. We have received advice from London Vision, the Pockington Trust, and the Royal National Institute for the Blind so far. We are looking to build relationships with other accessibility specialist organisations to be as inclusive as possible and be on trend with the latest tools.

Complying with regulations is important to us.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are taken into account in all of the Induction Healthcare apps’ design and UX process; where supported by the operating system, and where otherwise applicable, for example supporting enlarged or dyslexic font types. Our web applications are built according to the guidance set out by the World Wide Web Consortium in the Web Accessibility Initiative – Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA). We will soon be running WCAG 2.1 AA compliance testing on all new features.

We test using a range of methods and tech.

Our Quality Assurance and release processes require all new features to be tested for accessibility, using a range of methods: browser plugins, automated tools, and heuristics.

Browser plugins

Web accessibility is a well-served area with many tools available for testing, including plugins and extensions that can be used when testing with an internet browser.

Automated tools

Some of our automated regression test suites run accessibility checks to complement the suite so that each page the tests run through also check for compliance with WCAG.


In addition to the testing tools used, we apply established testing heuristics to replicate being a disabled user using assistive tools, such as screen readers. We do so internally but also have external consultants that can support our testing needs.

Accessible Product Case Study: Patient Portal

The accessibility of our Patient Portal has been a focus area of product development and user experience in 2020, culminating in an award of WCAG 2.1 AA compliance status by the accessibility experts at the Royal National Institute for the Blind. We achieved this through approaching the following areas

Mobility issues

All the written content throughout the Portal is provided at a readability level expected of a primary school child. All new content added will be assessed as part of our Quality Assurance process: only sentences with a Flesch-Kincaid readability score less than 8 (equivalent to UK Year 7/US Grade 8) will be acceptable. The only exception to this is legal text, but the aim there is to also use plain English where possible.

Sight loss and blindness

Particular attention has been given to sight-related needs as the Patient Portal is mainly driven by written content and so has the potential to discriminate in favour of visual users.

  • Colour palette: simplified to only contain a limited set of colours for consistency and better visibility
  • Colour contrast: complies with WCAG 2.1. AA in all cases, and sometimes with AAA
  • Screen readers: fully work, including VoiceOver, TalkBack for mobile devices, and NVDA and Jaws for desktop
  • Braille printers: can be used if compatible with the above screen readers
Hearing loss

The Patient Portal does not currently have any audio-only content which could disadvantage someone with hearing difficulty. If we provide any future content, such as video calling, we will apply the same high standards of accessibility and usability as the rest of the Portal has.

The Induction Healthcare Group website is designed so that users of it should be able to:

  • Change the colours, contrast levels, and fonts
  • Zoom in up to 200% with text staying visible on the screen,
  • Where presented, zoom in up to 200% for all image scaling without loss of resolution
  • Navigate the whole site using a keyboard, with skip to content links available when first tabbing on a page
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software (please see list below in section third party tools used for testing)
  • Read most of the website using screen readers (please see list below in section third party tools used for testing)
  • Read most of the website on devices without a screen, like a braille computer
How accessible this website is

This website is mostly accessible and complies with WCAG 2.1 AA, with some exceptions:

  • We use some third party tools as part of this site and cannot control their accessibility
  • stock market graphs
  • Salesforce contact forms
  • Social media plugins on posts
  • video plugin
  • Videos do not currently have captions
  • PDF files created before 2021 do not have bookmarks or alt text on images
  • Not all pages have headings in ascending order

We are continually working on improvements and these issues will be addressed as soon as we can.

How we tested this website

We go through a thorough programme of testing. Every new website feature is tested itself and in relation to other features. We undertake tests to check known accessibility issues and test new features, e.g. keyboard only navigation.

We have tested the website using the following tools:

Testing frequency

These tests are done according to a regular cycle, carried out for each release. We run accessibility tests with each new release to identify any new problems.

Managing issues

Our test strategy helps us find issues quickly, report to our development team and fix efficiently. To keep track of issues, every item we find is logged in our internal systems so that we can monitor accessibility issues. We then aim to take action to fix any high priority items and make them available in each new release.

Certification and conformance

This programme of testing and continuous improvement has enabled the website to be certified. This means that the website handles the biggest and most common barriers for disabled users.This website complies with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) to ‘AA’ standard.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We are always looking to improve accessibility. As we make improvements, we will update this statement.

Regular accessibility review

We plan to undertake an accessibility review each year and update the content of this accessibility statement. The last review was in March 2021.
